Host Students Receive Copy Proclamation at SCAS Board of Directors Meeting


Springfield Mayor Houston proclaimed Tuesday, November 19, 2013 as Ashikaga Gettysburg Address Delegation Day in Springfield to honor the participation of the five student members of the¬†Ashikaga Gettysburg Address Delegation in the 150th Anniversary of President Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address. Janet Kenney, the President of the Board of Directors of the Sister Cities Association of Springfield presented Springfield host students with a copy of the proclamation at the December 9 Board meeting.

The Gettysburg Address continues to be one of the greatest speeches ever written; and

WHEREAS, the annual Ashikaga Abraham Lincoln Gettysburg Address Speech and Essay Contest is  Sister City of Ashikaga, Tochigi, Japan, the Ashikaga City Board of Education, and the Ashikaga City Chamber of Commerce; and

WHEREAS, the Contest is open to all Ashikaga students in junior high and high school who compete in two categories: delivery of the Gettysburg Address in English and writing of a short essay relating the s Gettysburg Address to an issue in the 21st Century; and expense paid trip to Springfield, Illinois to recite the Address in the Hall of Representatives at the Old State Capitol; and

WHEREAS, the 2013 winners reciting the Gettysburg Address were Rintaro Uchimura, Yoshinao Asanuma, Tomoyo Ieda, Miku Okazaki and Ayumi Morita; and

WHEREAS, the 2013 Sister Cities Association of Springfield Host Students were Beth Haxel, Alyssa Jackson, Riley Murphy, Bryce Ribelin and Seton Tournoux; and the Delegation was led by Ashikaga City School Superintendent Hiroshi Takagi, who was assisted by Board of Education Teacher
Consultant Hidekazu Takagi; and

WHEREAS, the government of Japan was represented at the Presentation Ceremony by Consul General Masaharu Yoshida, of the Consulate of Japan at Chicago.

NOW THEREFORE I, J. Michael Houston, Mayor of the City of Springfield, Illinois, do hereby proclaim Tuesday, November 19, 2013 to be

in the City of Springfield.
