Mayor Pradel to Award Neuqua Valley Art Student Wednesday for Sister Cities International

Morgan Demski will be awarded for her work in the 2012 Sister Cities International Young Artists Showcase competition.

Mayor A. George Pradel and members of the Sister Cities Commission will present Neuqua Valley High School student Morgan Demski with an award for her work in the 2012 Sister Cities International Young Artists Showcase competition.

Demski will receive a certificate from Sister Cities International and a monetary award from the Naperville Sister Cities Commission for placing as a top ten finalist in the competition, which featured thousands of entries from around the world. The event will take place at 10:50 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 19 at Neuqua Valley High School, 2360 95th St.

This is the first time that an entry from a Naperville student was named as a finalist in the international competition. Demski’s artwork, titled “What Could Have Been,” was the first place winner in the Naperville Young Artists Showcase held earlier this year.

The 2012 Young Artists Showcase contest theme was “Youth as the Catalyst for Change.” Entrants were asked to use artwork to express how communication, technology and individual initiative can lead to dramatic social change. Submissions could highlight an experience with social media, how a youth is creating change in his or her community or how global communication and exchange has had an impact on one’s life.

About 50 pieces of artwork from students in Naperville Community Unit School District 203 and Indian Prairie School District 204 were entered into the local contest.

The Sister Cities Commission will host the traveling exhibit of the Young Artists Showcase finalists’ work at sites throughout Naperville in September and October. The exhibit is current on display at the Naperville Municipal Center, 400 S. Eagle St., through Sept. 14, before being moved to the Sister Cities tent for display during the Riverwalk Art Fair on Sept. 15 and 16. The exhibit will travel to NVHS for the week of Sept. 17 through 21. Other display dates include Oct. 9 through 16 at Naperville North High School.
